New season, new characters! Creator Rachael New and some stars of the series talk about the newcomers of Season 2 and how they fit into Eliza and The Duke's lives.
(upbeat music) - Miss Scarlet!
- Season 2 has lots of lovely new characters.
We have Hattie Parker, who is the fearsome Mrs.
Parker's niece, who is this very sweet, naive young woman, who comes to London to be her aunt's companion.
- Eliza is charmed by Hattie.
- Well, I am not one to gossip.
- Of course, but please do.
- She supports her, and she supports her life choices, and recognizes that they're not hers, and she wouldn't opt for that life, but gets that that's right for her.
And I think that's really wonderful.
- Come in!
- [Rachael] Sterling, the Duke's old boss died in Season 1.
So he has a new boss.
- I just wanted to come by and introduce myself.
I'm Inspect- - I know exactly who you are.
- I play Chief Superintendent, Fergus Munro - and it was good to hear that one my own men was from the old hometown.
- You're from Glasgow, sir?
- He sees something in Duke, and Duke's seen something in him, and recognizes that there's an opportunity.
- He nourishes young policemen and tries to show them the proper way how to behave on a police force.
So, he's quite a, an honorable man, I would say.
But he knows how to play the game.
- He is like a gift.
But without giving too much away, slowly, slowly, things aren't quite as they seem.
- Want another, Skipper?
- Phelps, he's an interesting man.
He comes from the community he's policing, so he knows about street life.
He's worked hard to get where he is as a detective.
- He, I think, is Duke's man on the ground.
He's his boots.
When Duke needs something done, Phelps is doing it for him.
And then you throw Fitzroy into that relationship, and you've sort of got these really opposing coppers and detectives.
So it's a lot of fun.
- Screw your courage to the sticking place, and we'll not fail.
Lady Macbeth.
- Do we have to go with him?
- I play Detective Oliver Fitzroy, he's our new detective.
He's quite naive, not very good at policing.
- Take him in for questioning and start using your common sense, Detective!
- From the very start the Duke and Fitzroy don't maybe meet eye to eye.
- The Duke doesn't really want the burden of having to look after Fitzroy and fix his many, many mistakes.
And Fitzroy does struggle in the job that he is in, and we watch him kind of falter and make mistakes, but we kind of love him for it because we know he is trying his best.
- You must learn to analyze a crime scene and that involves more than just taking notes.
Start using your intuition man, eh?
- The fact that they didn't take the frame means they had time.
There was no panic to snatch and grab, sir.
- Good.
