(upbeat music) - [Director] And action!
- "Miss Scarlet and The Duke" is a Victorian crime drama set in London in 1882.
And it's about a young woman, Eliza Scarlet, who's trying to make her way as a respected private detective.
- I'm only surprised you haven't changed the name to your own.
- Miss above the door?
That would be a sure way never to have any clients.
And it follows a number of characters.
Most importantly, the Duke, and it follows her personal and professional involvement with him.
- The next time you steal police property, I shall have no choice but to arrest you.
She has inherited this private detective firm and job from her father.
And along the way, she enlists the help of a detective inspector, William Wellington, aka the Duke.
- Her father dies and leaves her with debt, so she has to find a way to fend for herself.
She wants to be a private detective herself so has to find a way to make that work.
- That's blackmail.
- That's business.
- It's got a style to it, a coolness, humor.
How dare I come and rescue you?
- I would hardly call this a rescue.
(Duke screams) (Scarlet screams) - In my eyes, I think it's a love story.
The writer's fantastic.
The dialogue's brilliant.
Pulls off the page.
- You can handle everyone.
- I cannot handle you.
The characters are just fantastic so you really get to play with them and have fun.
- That's not the way out.
- I think the biggest takeaway for the viewers it's gonna be the characters.
- Being a detective is a job for a man, Eliza.
- And yet you do it every day, William.
- What happens when you catch your villain?
Do you hit the scoundrel with your purse?
- As soon as you meet them, you're gonna fall in love with them.
