(dramatic music) - It's not working, Andreas, the hotel, Crete, everything.
- [Lawrence] Are you Susan Ryeland?
- Yes, that's me.
- It's about our daughter, she's gone missing.
We think it may be because of one of your books.
- I've been offered a job.
I've been offered 10,000 pounds to find a missing person, Cecily Treherne.
What is it exactly that you want me to do?
- I want you to come to the hotel, I want you to read the book.
- The real killer is named in the book.
- "Atticus Pund Takes the Case".
- [Susan] Alan Conway came to your hotel?
- [Lawrence] Yes, he did, it's clear that he used the real events that have taken place as some sort of inspiration.
- [Alan] Tooley was a picturesque village in the county of Devonshire.
In the summer of 1954, its most famous resident was the British actress, Melissa James.
- From what I can tell Melissa James had no enemies.
At sometime between 6:28 and 6:38 in the evening, somebody broke into her house and strangled her.
- So who do you think may have been responsible?
- Lance and Maureen Gardner at the hotel, she had her doubts about them.
And there's a film producer called Oscar Berlin.
He had a row with Ms. James just one hour before she was killed.
- I've changed my mind.
- There's a financial void.
Man by the name of Algernon Maud.
Dodgy customer, if there ever was one.
- [Susan] How am I supposed to know what's happened to Cecily Treherne?
It's got nothing to do with me.
- Is that true?
- Maybe I did say that it would make a good story, but I didn't tell him to write it.
- I just find it incredible that you are being paid 10,000 pounds to read a book.
- I'm trying to find Cecily before it's too late.
I should leave this alone.
- But you won't.
- I can't.
