(dramatic music) - Now I've been at the front of this.
There's been a big group of us.
There are over 500 of us, and I've never felt it was just me.
It's been about all of us as a group, and I think that's the important thing to remember.
It is important that people realize what has been going on for so many years.
It's diabolical what's gone on.
It really is.
But now, fortunately, we are starting to try and put it right for everybody.
And yeah, at the end of the day, I hope people can get on with their lives again.
Awful lots of people had their lives ruined and the loss of their businesses and financially bankrupted.
But it started here, I suppose, and on the fight back.
It was a long, hard slog.
But nowadays, I'm pleased that we're through it.
- These Postmasters were pillars of their communities and everybody knew them.
And then more obviously when this came out that they were stealing from what they thought was old people, people treated them terribly.
I mean, my character, Lee Castleton, had to move, his children were bullied at school.
- Some people are based very specifically on real people and some are amalgamations of different people because there's obviously thousands of people infected.
What Gwen's done so beautifully is to handpick different stories and the very different experiences of people that very often ended in very, very challenging times financially, emotionally, and everywhere.
We've been in collaboration with our real counterparts throughout.
So I was very, very lucky that I went to Alan and Suzanne's house very early on.
It's been an absolute honor and a privilege to speak with and work alongside Suzanne and Alan because in my eyes, they're absolute heroes.
Resilience and strength of character and courage that they both showed is really, really inspiring.
- This story's been going on for 20 years.
These people have been suffering like this for 20 years.
There's so many aspects of this story that beg a belief, but almost the biggest overriding one is that this happened in Britain.
These people were not protected and they were not believed.
They were not listened to.
People lost their homes.
People lost their lives.
- You can't even imagine what these people have gone through.
It's horrendous what happened, but I'm really proud to be a part of telling this story that needs to be told.
