- This is the great unfinished novel in the body of literature that we love in Jane Austen's books.
- "Sanditon" is based upon 11 chapters written by Jane Austen right before her death.
It centers around this seaside resort that's being developed.
- It has complex characters, a really strong heroine, and a really beautiful love story.
- Jane Austen was very good at creating characters with great wit, humor, and charm.
- May I present Miss Charlotte Heywood.
- Enchanted.
- Charlotte Heywood is a step in a more modern direction in the sense that she's practical, she's not afraid to speak her mind.
Sometimes that gets her into trouble.
- You are very free with your opinions.
- [Theo] Sidney and Charlotte begin with quite a tempestuous relationship, which is kind of the fun in it.
- [Woman] What is your opinion of him?
- [Charlotte] I never met anyone quite so confounding.
- But, as the story progresses, some of the ice begins to thaw between them .
- Jane Austen introduces a character called Miss Lambe, a very wealthy heiress from the West Indies.
- We see what it was like to be a black person in England at that time, what Miss Lambe might have faced.
- She's a young woman who's trying to piece together who she is in a place where there's no one that looks like her, but Miss Lambe does feel a certain little joy out of shaking things up a bit and making people uncomfortable.
- An heiress with 100,000 must be in want of a husband.
- I don't care to be any man's property.
- "Sanditon" is classic Jane Austen, but then, it's a little more progressive than I think we're used to.
- She had a modern sensibility, so these beautiful works remain timeless and it's equally modern and fresh for us.
- "Sanditon" has all the usual pleasures of Jane Austen, except that it's a story you haven't seen before, so you don't know how it's going to go.
