(upbeat country music) - [Charlotte] Our conversation at the party, I hope you won't think too badly of me.
- I don't think of you at all, Miss Heywood.
I don't care what you think or how you feel.
- [Charlotte] Certain people are inherently disagreeable.
- Dammit!
- [Miss Lambe] He thinks you're a bad influence, you know.
- As if there could be any greater incentive for us to be friends.
(laughing) (splashing) - Oh!
- Miss Heywood, am I never to get away from you?
- Excuse me.
- I should have thought someone like you would be in search of a wealthy man to marry.
- If I were to choose a husband, wealth would not come into it.
Should not a good marriage be based on mutual love and affection?
It'll have to be just in these levels.
- I've never met anyone like you before, Miss.
- I should never have expected you to be so capable.
- Because I'm a young woman, or because up until now, you've dismissed me as frivolous?
- Is it conceivable that we've had each other wrong?
- [Sidney] Miss Heywood.
- [Charlotte] Never met anyone quite so confounding.
Mr Parker?
(sighs) He inspires an anger in me I did not know I possessed, and yet I find that his good opinion means more to me than anybody else's.
(cheering) - [Woman] You're of marrying age, it must be much on your mind.
- I have no doubt that Charlotte would rather be sat somewhere quietly reading Heraclitus.
(laughing) - I'm a farmer's daughter who reads books.
What could I possibly have in common with anyone here?
- But people don't look at you the way they look at me.
- This is what your father wanted!
- What about what I want?
- Perhaps I would do better to merely simper and say nothing.
Is that not what young ladies are supposed to do?
- I wouldn't wish for you to change.
Not for the world.
(cheering) - Miss Heywood.
- What, what is it you want from me?
- He doesn't deserve you, Charlotte.
- You aren't in love with him.
Please say you're not.
- [Man] Ah!
- If I should ever fall in love, it would not be with a man like him.
- Is that really what you think of me?
- I'd sooner be naive than insensible of feeling.
- [Man] Oh my word, Miss, you are not afraid to speak your mind.
- You're not nearly as unfeeling as you pretend.
- Well, if that is the case, I will ask you to keep it to yourself.
I have a reputation to uphold.
