Bringing the '70s to Life

From colorful costumes to outrageous mustaches, hear how the cast and creators brought the 1970s to life in Prime Suspect: Tennison.
- Bloody hell.
Look at the state of that.
- The hair is something I'm quite happy about, actually.
I come in, get it blow-dried every morning.
The facial hair, on the other hand, not keen on that.
- I've had a lot of people say, quite a new one, actually, recently, "Nose neighbor?"
Never heard of that in my life, until I grew this.
- It's a really dodgy looking 'tache.
Like, the facial hair is really dodgy.
- It's an unfortunate time for facial hair for men.
- So funny, they've got to keep this for three and a half months.
Tommy went to his mum's wedding with a huge mustache.
- The '70s look has several different looks.
It was the first time that people had had hairdryers at home.
Obviously, the image that we had is where Jane ended up.
Which was the Helen Mirren character.
Most girls had quite long hair in the '70s.
- Whenever I have my hair down, I love it.
And I just kinda want to flick it everywhere.
The '70s police cars are actually, I think, they're quite funny.
Like they're quite like twee.
Not like the CID cars, they're quite cool.
Definitely feels like you're in the '70s and you're in that decade and it does definitely help with the whole kind of vibe.
- We're shooting scenes of me in the car in London streets.
It can be a little strange being in a car that's not moving.
The one thing that they always tell you is you have to turn the steering wheel a little bit.
The gravity of a car, like, sends you moving, rather than you have to move yourself.
- I can't see the projection.
All I can see is the crew and Julian behind the camera.
So, you gotta' really use your imagination.
- Just look fantastic, it just helps you get into character.
You just look around and you are in the '73.
You don't have to imagine it, which is helpful for us.
Definitely.
- The story of Tennison starts in 1973 'cause that's when the women's force became integrated with the men.
Prior to that, mostly they dealt with domestic incidents and doing traffic and things like that.
- When this kind of integration happened, then I don't think that they got any warning that it was going to happen at all, then it happened really quickly.
They didn't get a lot of training.
So, it was like they were kind of thrown into the deep end.
- Uh, I need a uniform presence at a next-of-kin visit.
- I haven't done one of those, yet.
- Well can you find me another plonk then?
- No, I didn't mean that, I'll do it.
- I think what's been quite rewarding is Stefanie, Sam, and some of the others, asking about what that period was like.
And quite often it's, "Was it really like that?"
And I say, "Yeah, it was."
They want to get it right.
