- In the beginning of the story, Mercedes is a young Catalan fisher woman. She's really deeply in love with Edmond Dantes.
- Mercedes?! Mercedes has grown up alongside Edmond in the small city of Marseilles. The two of them are very much in love, very young, very naive and innocent to the dark side of the world.
- She's about to get married, and she really is living a young love, a free love. She's very loyal to this love story she has with Edmond.
- [Sam] Edmond is sent away to prison on the night of his engagement party.
- [Mercedes] What's going on?
- [Soldier] Hold her.
- Edmond, where are they taking you?
- I don't know, I don't know! And that throws their relationship into all sorts of uncertainty.
- She's gonna be forced to believe he's now dead, and that's going to destroy her. But, after a while, she eventually gonna have to move on with her life and she's gonna evolve. She's gonna become a new woman. She's gonna now move to Paris. She is now married to Fernand, she has a son.
- Eventually, after 15 years of suffering in prison, Edmond makes it his purpose to find her again.
- Count, how lovely of you to come. She meets with the Count of Monte Cristo, this wealthy and mysterious man. And deep inside her, the day she meets him, the minute she meets him, she knows it might be Edmond, but she cannot believe it because he's dead. And now, Edmond is a different man. He has been through a lot, and he's consumed by an idea of revenge. And there is no room left for this innocent love they used to have for each other.
- I think there's a lot of mixed feelings for Edmond. There's the feeling of betrayal, the feeling of loss, anger. She's now a different woman, and I'm a different man. But there is still some semblance of confusion and love deep down within him. So when they're reacquainted, there are so many beautiful moments and beautiful scenes where the two of them are intertwined. She doesn't want to admit that she suspects that he is who he is, and he doesn't want to admit that he is who he is.
- Mercedes want also to protect her family, but she's tormented by the love she has for Edmond too. The fact that she is never gonna be able to live that love story ever again.
- The two of them have this very, very complicated pull towards one another, but can't do anything about it.
- If I did not think you were dead, I would've never married Fernand... I would've waited.
- How long would you have waited?
- I am still waiting. I love you, Edmond, I always have.
