(investigative music) - We come back to Series 2 of Unforgotten.
It's a historical case again.
- It's about these people trying to sort of run away from something, but it will always catch up with them.
- There's still stuff that you're not telling me.
- The individual stories are gone into in more depth, and each one of those has a discussive point within it.
- I'm DCI Cassie Stewart, this DI Sunil Khan.
- Is this David?
- What was nice about Cassie and about Sunny, was that they weren't maverick cops with awful psychological issues, or dark pasts.
- Certainly when I saw the script, I kind of thought, oh, they're, yeah, they're people who have worked together, and kinda get on.
What was remarkable about them was how unremarkable they were.
- Give me the remote!
- Will you two please be quiet, I'm on a work call!
- Be quiet.
- Listen, I know it's late.
- The script is beautifully crafted.
I mean, he's got a real gift for kind of bringing people to life and making them real.
- That's a sign of great writing.
- Yeah.
- Because it's all there.
- A police officer's just been round here.
- [Rosie] Great to have just older characters.
- [Badria] Older characters that interest and interesting for all the right reasons.
We're experienced, we've got lives, we've got kids.
- I think it's always fascinating to be able to just forensically study a character.
And this script, I think does it.
- [Badria] But we don't just see people presently.
- [Rosie] No.
- [Badria] We learn about what they were many years ago.
- Everybody has something that they've done in the past they're ashamed of, every single human being.
- We seem to be discussing philosophical questions about what it means to be evil.
Do you call someone evil or do you keep trying to understand the machinations behind their criminality?
- What I think what links all of our characters together is they've all been let down by someone they love.
- [Badria] And they've all experienced a tragedy.
- You've broken my heart.
- We think we know what we're doing, we hit a dead end, and it becomes a completely different case.
It just keeps opening up.
- [Rosie] It is about going into the people's lives properly.
It's not just the police people's view of their life.
It takes beyond the police.
- It does get you thinking about how you would cope in that particular situation.
- There are moments of tension this year where we hit a couple of points where we don't agree.
- But, Cassie sit down.
- No, I've gotta shoot.
- When you have people who get on really well, what happens when they kind of absolutely disagree?
How does that effect, not just they're working relationship, but their work as well.
- What you said earlier about nothing quite fitting.
I think I can see a way that it does.
And if I'm right, there are gonna be more bodies.
