(dynamic music) - Episode three, directed by Arne Toonen, is called Magic in Amsterdam, takes us slightly off piece into the world of ritual magic.
The opening of episode three, somebody is murdered in a locked room whilst performing a magical ritual.
And the question is, were they killed by someone else in the room, which they couldn't have been, or were they killed by a demon?
We've gone into slightly supernatural territory.
There is perhaps inevitably an earthbound explanation also.
And that was really, really fun to sort of dip into a slightly more alternative world, whilst remaining within the realms of a conventional crime story.
- I got a date.
With the Devil.
- Mm.
- You know, the occult, I think the whole entire episode is fun.
And mysterious, and otherworldly, and fascinating.
And I think there's other characters in Van der Valk that may be scared by this.
- The world of the occult and the magic I think for Lucienne is very difficult.
- [Lucienne] Isaak Englehart and Nik Delacorte, you knew them, right?
- Of course.
They're both dead to me.
A bit like you and your siblings.
- Excuse me.
- You remember them chasing you down across the garden.
No, no.
That's not it, it was a farm yard.
But you're good, fast, faster than them really.
Only they're older and stronger.
- Enough.
- It certainly shakes her.
We get a reveal of something of her past.
- And Eddie is not a fan of the occult.
He doesn't wanna mess with the heebie-jeebie stuff.
- What about you?
You practicing magic?
- Yeah, trying to.
Invisible cause, visible effect.
