Learn what inspired the creators and cast of the new series to bring the story of Piet Van der Valk to the screen!
- [Man] There's another dead body.
(intense orchestral music) - In pursuit, turning into Herengracht.
Two in a day?
- I'm Chris Murray and I'm the writer of "Van der Valk" and the creator of this series.
(sighs) (yells in frustration) It was originally a television series in the 1970s and '80s, based on some books written by Nicholas Freeling.
(yells in pain) We essentially revisited the books and tried to create a new detective series for a contemporary audience.
"Van der Valk" is largely centered around the eponymous hero-- - My name is Marc Warren and I'm playing Van der Valk, or Piet Van der Valk.
- And solves crimes, predominantly murders, that take place in the city of Amsterdam.
- Is Milan in trouble?
- Yeah, he's dead.
- He's someone who's seen it all and done it all and lived a life.
- It's not rocket science.
Someone's dead, we find out who killed them through a process of steady but gentle, ceaseless prodding.
- Gonna check out the other side.
- [Chris] There's a depth and a vulnerability, but also a toughness.
- Van der Valk, is he always unfriendly?
- No, just with you.
- He's the boss and Marc has an authority that perhaps will surprise people.
- He is solitary.
He is a lone wolf, you could describe him as that, but I would actually say that he's more of a pack leader.
- Come on, you know I'm not good at the bad news speech.
- Yeah, but you're the chief investigating officer.
- Yeah, which means I get to delegate, and you're very good at all that sensitive stuff.
- Van der Valk and Lucienne are a really good balance.
I think they compliment each other.
There's a good dose of respect between them I think.
You were rude.
- He's covering something.
- Didn't have to see us.
- Listen, he knew your name.
I didn't tell him you were comin'.
He was prepped.
- She's more empathetic than he is, so she brings that side up.
He doesn't have a-- - He doesn't have a soul.
(chuckles) - I rang the restaurant.
They come in every week, she's younger than him, they're all over each other, and the owner thinks she lives nearby.
- You could have told me that at the beginnin'.
- I was trying to impress.
- Don't.
They've got a really great bunch of actors together, and there's somethin' very appealing about each of the characters in it, so there's somethin' for everybody.
(banging loudly) - God, what is wrong with you?
- Get your ass into gear, we've got work to do.
(exhales exasperatedly) Darryl is just, Darryl is like a force of nature.
- If you insist.
- People are gonna fall in love with the team.
I think they should, too.
- There should be a sense of, we want to hang with the gang.
We would like to be in that world.
We would like to spend time with that team.
- I want progress by mornin'.
- Well, that's not gonna be possible, is it?
- In Amsterdam, anything is possible.
Some very unusual locations that people wouldn't have seen before.
- It's just vibrant.
It's really, really sexy, really modern city.
The different worlds that we delve into with each of the crimes are unusual.
They're quite bizarre and I think we've not really seen that before.
A really cinematic feel to it, I think, you know?
- You tune in and your brain just goes on.
- I have no idea how this is gonna end.
- You just get thrown in and you just dive in.
(warm orchestral music)
