- [Albert] Are you quite well?
- No I can't say that I am, sir.
- As the season progresses, we see very sadly what is the deterioration of Lord M.
- The weakness on the left side suggests a grave disorder, my lord.
May I suggest you put your affairs in order.
- I asked the director if I could shoot it very quickly because I think with goodbye scenes it's, you don't want to say those words too often.
Ah this is such difficult times I wish you were not so far away.
- Oh, I feel quite certain that you can manage with me now, ma'am.
When we look at a script and we read it we kind of meet each other there.
And if it's there, you don't mess with it.
I learned so much from you, you know.
- You learned from me?
- More than you can imagine.
The trouble with a scene like that is how many times you have to do it.
And try to stop it from becoming a kind of impersonation of itself.
- And what was really, really important in this scene was for her to try to not let him know that she knew.
So you know that you're saying goodbye and you both know that you're saying goodbye.
You're both lying to each other to be kind to each other I think.
So there's a lot going on within that scene.
I shan't be able to travel much soon and so I wanted you to have something to remind you of all the fun to be had in London when you choose to return.
- And it goes, a scene like that will go through phony stages.
Especially if it's what it has for it is a naturalness and a realness then that can start to ape itself after a while and you end up being a pastiche of realness if you're not careful.
So, it goes in and out of that if you're filming something all day.
And we did it many, many times.
- If you see all the different versions, most of them I'm a complete blubbering mess.
So, I was very, very emotional.
So it's interesting, Jeff the director we've chosen more... there's earlier takes when I basically wasn't streaming with tears really.
Goodbye, Lord M.
