(melancholy music) - You no longer surprise me like once you did.
I do not think you will surprise me again.
- Does Cromwell see his forecoming?
I think that's one of the delights you'll have watching the program is to consider that.
And in a way, I hope I don't answer it one way or another.
- No one could keep their secrets from me.
'Tis no use to try.
There's a very noticeable, tragic arc.
A very satisfying, I would say though, tragic arc, Cromwell.
I made my minister and by God I will maintain him.
- In the second series, Cromwell exacts his revenge on Cardinal Wolsey's enemies.
Cardinal Wolsey was his mentor and his protector.
People who brought Wolsey down, Cromwell brings them down, executes them.
Cromwell is left alone.
She defies me.
- As Henry becomes increasingly frustrated with the various political vicissitudes of the time, virtually the only person he can dump his frustration on is Thomas Cromwell.
- Draw up a charge of treason against him.
- It's a remarkable thing that Henry VII has advanced a person like Cromwell 'cause of merit and ability (feet tapping) and has broken the mold and defends Cromwell and stands by Cromwell on many occasion.
- But I mean to reward him, and his whole house.
In spite of Herculean efforts to give the king what he wants, the work becomes too much for one man.
And I think you just start to see he just loses his magic touch.
- The rise and the fall of people is certainly on display in this season and I think that's a tremendously exciting thing to watch.
- Oh, your title is still a novelty.
He'll have you.
You'll be dead before they have to use it.
- The woman who disturbs him, most of all I should say, is Cardinal Wolsey's illegitimate daughter who has become a nun.
And she much to his horror says, you betrayed my father.
And the way she says it gives cause for Cromwell to be concerned that she got this opinion from Wolsey himself.
And this becomes one of the many arrows into the heart or the body of Cromwell.
- You are seriously accusing Lord Cromwell.
- He was no Lord in those days.
- I think he's aware all the time that something bad could happen.
You are dealing with a regime that is sustained by violence and you are an agent of that regime, so you're probably gonna die that way.
