Must Knows: Wallander, Season 4
Get your nordic noir on and return to southern Sweden to revisit essential insights into the complex character of the brooding and intuitive detective, Kurt Wallander. Find out everything you need to know as Wallander, starring Kenneth Branagh, returns on Sundays, May 8 - May 22, on MASTERPIECE on PBS.
The Beautiful Baiba Liepa
In Season 3's The Dogs of Riga, Wallander began a relationship with a woman who could actually understand him, Baiba Liepa, the widow of Latvian detective Karlis Liepa. The two parted as lovers and friends, as Wallander returned to Sweden and the harrowing work that always awaits him.
The Specter of Alzheimer's
Haunted by his father's decline and death from Alzheimer's, Wallander is ever-aware of the cruel disease that ravaged his father's mind. Their relationship was a tortured one even before Povel's sickness, as he never approved of Wallander's choice to join the police force. Yet they were more alike than Wallander would have liked; Povel, a successful artist, painted the same bleak landscape over and over again. Both men, powerless in the face of their obsessions, fought a losing battle against their natures. Viewers will be reminded of this every time they spot Povel's melancholy autumn birch trees on a wall.
A Reconciliation with Linda
When we last saw Wallander in Before the Frost, he was accompanying his pregnant daughter to the obstetrics clinic. But their relationship wasn't always amicable; it was painfully strained after years of Wallander's obsessive police work and the dissolution of his marriage to Linda's mother. This tender gesture of reconciliation around his first grandchild offers the lonely man true hope. Though he failed as Linda's father, he can perhaps be a genuine part of his grandchild's life.
With a grandchild on the way and a reconciliation with Linda, Wallander dares to have hope. As he works to reverse damaging years of neglected health, managing his diabetes, exercising, and working toward a balanced life with his family, he is also trying to fortify himself against a fate similar to his father's.
