6 Times Grantchester's Geordie Keating Stole Our Hearts

Reconciling with Sidney
Sidney's downward spiral at the end of Season 2, stemming from his torn heart over Amanda and his ongoing trauma from the war, results in a fight between him and Geordie that nearly costs them their dear friendship. But eventually, finally, they do make up. At Geordie's 50th birthday party, the pair talk, and Geordie shares more about his own trauma from the war, and also how he met Cathy on the very day he returned home from Burma. It was a rare moment of vulnerability from the hardened detective, leading to his confession to Sidney: "I've been a bit lost without you." Cue tears.
Mending His Marriage
Geordie loses his way in Season 3 when he engages in an affair with a woman named Margaret. His relationships with Cathy and his children are more strained than ever, especially with his oldest daughter Esme, who doesn't feel like talking to someone who "makes Mum cry." Geordie doesn't feel like he deserves forgiveness, but Sidney tries to convince him he does. At Mrs. C. and Jack's wedding, Geordie finally finds the words Cathy needs to hear. "I forgot, didn't I? In the midst of all the nappies and laundry, I forgot it was you and me." It didn't change everything, but for the first time in a long time, he and Cathy had hope.
Will's Brush with Death
In the Season 7 finale, Mrs. C. has surgery for her cancer and has lost faith, hope seems lost for Will and Bonnie, and a crazed student confesses to being the murderer they've been looking for, moments before stabbing Will in the vicarage. Thankfully, Geordie puts the pieces together just in time to race over to the vicarage, take down the student, and get help for Will. As he holds Will's hand while they anxiously await the ambulance, Geordie insists Will is not dying there, choking up while telling him, "[Bonnie] needs you. Ernie needs you. And so do I."
In the end, Will does indeed survive, and finally faces his fears and marries Bonnie, Geordie's niece. After the wedding, Will and Geordie have a moment alone, where Will tells Geordie (whether he wants to hear it or not) that he loves him, prompting a heartfelt, "I love you too, son," in return.
Father Figure
Since the arrival of Miss Scott as the police station's secretary in Season 6, she and Geordie have been good friends to each other, in and outside of work. In many ways, Geordie becomes a father figure to her, which results in the very touching moment in Season 10 when he convinces Miss Scott and Larry that while he understands that they need to keep their marriage under wraps in order for Miss Scott to keep working at the station, they still deserve to celebrate their nuptials. The pair end up having a small, private ceremony at the church, filled with their chosen Grantchester family, and Geordie not only serves as Larry's best man, but melts out hearts in the moment when Alphy asks, "Who gives this woman away?" Geordie steps forward proudly: "That would be me."
Supporting Alphy
In that very same episode, Geordie speaks with Alphy about the letter he's received from his estranged birth mother, encouraging him to see what she has to say. Alphy has struggled with opening it alone, and asks Geordie to read it to him, needing his friendship in that moment perhaps more than ever. Geordie, of course, doesn't give it a second thought: "Give it here." He'd do anything to support his best friend, so he sits with Alphy, reading the letter and grabbing his hand for extra strength.
Bonding with His Son
In Season 10, Geordie finds himself struggling to connect with his son David, an artistic, sensitive soul, who enjoys fashion more than sports, something that Geordie doesn't quite understand. But above all else, Geordie loves his son, and after Cathy convinces him that David doesn't hate him, the pair finally bond over a shared love of fishing. Geordie then tells David the words that his young son needed to hear most: "Whatever you want to do in life, whatever you like, whatever you want to be… I’ll always be proud. I love you, son."
