What is The Gold About?
The Gold chronicles the notorious 1983 Brink’s-Mat gold heist and its far-reaching aftermath. Six blue-collar criminals broke into the Brink’s Mat warehouse near London's Heathrow Airport expecting to steal around £1 million in foreign currency. Instead, they chanced upon three tons of pure gold bullion.
What followed was far more extraordinary than the robbery itself. Converting that staggering haul into spendable cash sparked a wave of sophisticated financial crime, from pioneering money laundering operations to real estate fraud, drug trafficking, and corporate scams.
At the end of The Gold Season 1, police realize they'd only ever tracked half of the original gold heist. In Season 2, we learn what happened to the other 50 percent. The system of money laundering is now on a staggering scale and reaching places as remote as the Caribbean island of Tortola. At least one of the crooks becomes as rich as England's queen, but there's a cost to living on the run. This is a thrilling race for the cops setting up elaborate stings to catch the bad guys, and for the bad guys scrambling to avoid capture.
Who’s in The Gold’s Cast?
Paste Magazine says The Gold’s “casting alone is enough to knock you over,” and it’s hard to argue. The high-octane story is anchored by Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington) as DCI Brian Boyce, the determined police task force commander leading the investigation. He’s joined by Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) as the calculating career criminal Kenneth Noye, and Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey, Becoming Elizabeth) as corrupt gold broker John Palmer, two of the key figures at the heart of the sprawling conspiracy.
Further casting includes Charlotte Spencer (Sanditon) and Emun Elliott (Guilt) as police partners in the unit tackling high-stakes cases, while Stephen Cambell Moore (Criminal Record) portrays a detective willing to bend the rules. On the criminal side, Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!), Sean Harris (Mission Impossible: Fallout), James Nelson-Joyce (The Nest), Tom Hughes (Victoria), Sam Spruell (Fargo), and Joshua McGuire (Cheaters) bring depth and menace to the ever-expanding conspiracy. Stefanie Martini (Maigret) and Rochele Neil (Three Little Birds) help round out the ensemble with characters who become entangled in the fallout through their relationships with two men behind the crimes.
