Tom Brittney After Grantchester: What Is He Doing Now?

Tom Brittney won over audiences as Reverend Will Davenport on Grantchester, and the actor hasn't slowed down since leaving the hit series after six seasons. From rumored superhero roles and major film projects to directing, producing, and his ongoing bromance with Robson Green, here's what Brittney has been up to on screen and off—and where his career is headed next.
Tom Brittney is Building an Impressive Resume
We’ll see a lot of Tom Brittney on the big and small screen this year. He’s cast alongside J.K. Simmons in the new TV series The Westies, about a 1980s crime gang in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen. He also stars in two upcoming films: the sci-fi supernatural thriller Black Box, arriving in theaters this summer, and Fall 2: Deadpoint, a survival drama set in Thailand that is slated for fall 2026. His biggest leap from television to film so far is Netflix's 2025 action-comedy Back in Action, where he plays an assassin opposite Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz as former CIA agents drawn back into the world of espionage.
And according to Forbes, Brittney is reportedly in the mix for DC Studios' upcoming Batman film, Brave and the Bold. The rumor has gained traction, especially after reports that he also reached the final rounds of casting for Superman.
Brittney Maintains His Friendship with Robson Green
Tom Brittney and his Grantchester co-star Robson Green remain close friends off-screen, most recently partnering to produce a short film, (see below). Green has called Brittney his ideal fishing companion. And in the first season of the BBC’s Robson Green's Weekend Escapes, the pair explored County Durham together, camping, dragon boat racing, and foraging. In 2021, they made a playful cameo as backup musicians in Sam Fender’s music video for “Howden Aldi Death Queue.” in 2021. You can see their genuine camaraderie in this BTS video from the Grantchester set.
Tom Brittney Continues to Direct Beyond Grantchester
Brittney fulfilled a longtime ambition by making his television directing debut while starring in Grantchester. Since leaving the series, he has directed two acclaimed short films. The first, 2024's Foxhole, explores the moral dilemma faced by British soldiers after capturing a young German prisoner. Brittney also produced the film, with Robson Green serving as executive producer. He followed it with Joe, an adaptation of Jon Ransom's novel The Whale Tattoo, which won Best LGBTQ+ Film at 2025’s New Renaissance Film Festival. Brittney is now set to make his feature directorial debut with a full-length adaptation of The Whale Tattoo. He is also executive producer of the upcoming four-part TV drama Mavis Eccleston, starring Jonathan Pryce and Penelope Wilton, and written by Unforgotten’s creator Chris Lang.
Tom Brittney is a Passionate Photographer
Brittney calls photography his "second love" and spends much of his free time behind the camera. On the MASTERPIECE Studio podcast, he said he's inspired by renowned photojournalists Don McCullin and Steve McCurry and is drawn to capturing people in dramatic moments. He often brings his camera to set, and when Grantchester wrapped, he gifted Robson Green a photo book titled Shades of Green, featuring candid behind-the-scenes images of the cast and crew that he had taken throughout the series.
Brittney Remains Indebted to Outlander
Tom Brittney credits Outlander with introducing him to American audiences. He played fan-favorite Lt. Jeremy Foster, a British officer who helps heroine Claire early in the series. As Brittney recalled on the MASTERPIECE Studio podcast, "Because I was the first redcoat who wasn't evil, people really took to me." He says the role "opened a ton of doors," and he continues to connect with fans by appearing at Outlander conventions when his schedule allows, most recently 2024's KiCaSS—Kingdoms, Clans and Swords 'N Shields.
