Where Did Things Go Wrong for These Vanished Planes?

ByTim De Chant, Allison EckNOVA NextNOVA Next

The inexplicable disappearance of MH370 shocked the world, but it wasn’t the first flight to vanish without a trace.

We’ve created a map that shows the presumed accident locations of all missing passenger flights since 1948. The data was compiled by the Aviation Safety Network, a private, independent initiative founded in 1996 that provides up-to-date information on airliner accidents and other safety concerns.

Watch “Why Planes Vanish” tonight (Wednesday, October 8) at 9/8c on PBS to learn more about MH370 and new technologies that could make tracking flights easier and more comprehensive—even in areas with no radar coverage.
