This sea lion rookery lies on the peninsula's Pacific coast north of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka's capital. The enormous bulls protect their harems by roaring and fighting with other bulls. The pups are born in early summer and are ready to go to sea by fall. Sea lions prefer smooth, low-lying rocks, which ease sea entry and exit. The surrounding ocean also contains otters, seals, gray whales, and numerous species of seabirds.
