Blood
A variety of blood substitutes are currently undergoing
clinical trials. Known as oxygen-carrying compounds, these
artificial bloods come in two basic forms. The first is
derived from hemoglobin, a natural human substance that
ferries oxygen; the second is perfluorocarbons, which are
carbon-based synthetic compounds that also can carry oxygen.
