During the Spanish-American War of 1898, Corporal William Eddy of Colorado took hundreds of surveillance photographs from a kite rigged like Archibald's with a long shutter release attached to its string. Many of Eddy's aerial photographs—the first wartime surveillance photos in history—provided critical information to American troops about their adversaries' positions and fortifications.
