Periscope The USS Springfield is equipped with a Type 2 attack scope to the starboard and the Type 18 search scope to the port. Type 2 (shown here) is the more basic scope, which can only operate in daylight. The Type 18 search scope (not shown here) is capable of low-light operation, taking photographs with a 70 mm or digital camera, and displays its image on a television monitor. The Officer of the Deck, who is in command of the Control Room, stands in front of these two periscopes.
