Objective
To find and record data about cigarette advertisements.

To give students an opportunity to explore the impact of
cigarette marketing in the United States, copy and distribute
the "Advertising Survey" student handout.

Assign students to look for cigarette advertisements on their
way home and in their homes, recording their findings on the
survey form.

After they have collected the information, ask students to share
their results with the rest of the class. What findings are most
surprising? Discuss student ideas about the target audiences for
these advertisements.
Student answers will vary depending on the sources they use to find
advertisements. Encourage students to venture into different
settings to compare the advertising in different locations, and
discuss conclusions as to why targeted advertising plays such a
vital role in the cigarette market.
