Digging Fossils
Dinosaurs lived in nearly every part of the world, but their fossils are
found only in places where rocks of the right age are exposed. The western part
of the United States is one such place, and scientists and commercial dealers
often compete for access to this fossil-rich land. Who should have access?
Scientist Group
You can't believe your luck! These fossils might provide new evidence for your
research on dinosaurs. Current policy says that only scientists can obtain
permits to dig on public land. You have exclusive access to this important
site—and you want to keep it that way!
Commercial Dealer Group
You can't believe your luck! People will pay big bucks for fossils like these.
Current policy says that only scientists can obtain permits to dig on public
land. That means you can't dig there—you want this policy changed!

Part II
Write your answers on a separate sheet.
You will now prepare to argue your group's right to these fossils. Consider
these questions when forming your argument.
Who do you think owns public land, and why? What does this mean for your group?
List all the reasons why your group should have access to the site.
How do you feel about the other group sharing access? Why do you feel that way?
What compromises, if any, would your group be willing to make?
