Journey to Kilimanjaro

Program Overview

Mount Kilimanjaro in eastern Africa presents some of the most extreme climate conditions in the world. Although it is only a short distance from the equator, its peak is covered in ice and snow year-round. Kilimanjaro and other neighboring mountains are similar to islands: they are isolated ecosystems surrounded by a sea of grass. The plants and animals of the mountains have, through evolution, successfully adapted to these severe conditions. Over time, they have become so specialized that they probably would not survive out of their mountain habitat.
