Great Wildlife Heist, The

Program Overview

When exotic birds are illegally exported from other countries into the United States, who are the bad guys? This NOVA program follows the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department's sting, called "Operation Renegade," through Africa, Australia, Mexico, and the United States to uncover an international smuggling ring.

Some of the individuals targeted as smugglers claim that they are saving the birds from shrinking habitats, environmental threats, and farmers' guns. Others claim that breeding the birds in captivity can help replenish the populations of certain species. Since many of the birds involved are on the endangered species list, this episode of NOVA raises ethical questions about the actions of the people involved. Are the smugglers and dealers helping to save the birds, or are they driving them to extinction?
