Real Jurassic Park, The

Viewing Ideas

Before Watching

  1. Discuss the difference between a project that is theoretically possible and one that is technically feasible. What factors determine whether or not a given project is feasible? If a project is feasible, what factors should be considered before deciding to proceed? Why or why not? What are some examples of projects that should not be undertaken? Why?

After Watching

  1. What are the principal obstacles that scientists would face in creating a real Jurassic Park? What are some of the solutions they might propose?

  2. Ask students to compare the ethics of regenerating species that predate humans to regenerating those that became extinct because of human activity. What about the ethics of protecting species that are in danger of becoming extinct?

  3. Inform the class that Congress is conducting hearings on a bill to establish a Social Responsibility Review Board that would approve scientific research and development projects. Divide the class into teams. Have each team prepare testimony on a Jurassic Park proposal from a different point of view, such as that of a paleontologist, a paleobotanist, a theme park developer, or a philosopher. Each group should have the chance to testify and, at the close of the hearings, to respond to the others' testimony.
