Before Watching
-
Archeology teams often locate, identify, catalog, and map the
artifacts they find. Have students generate a list of skills
that team members should possess to be on a team like this.
Students should consider site location, types of artifacts, and
project goals as they determine skills each team member must
have. As students watch, have them look for the different
expertise and skills represented on the team and the
contributions made by each team member.
-
Some archeologists specialize in marine archeology, most often
exploring sunken ships. What would be the advantages or
disadvantages for an archeologist excavating in water? How might
it be different than a land-based excavation? What are some
differences between the ways artifacts are preserved in water
and on land? As students watch, have them keep a list of the
challenges involved in working underwater.
After Watching
-
Have students revisit their lists about the kinds of expertise
and skills represented by team members. What skills were ones
that students had predicted? What skills were evident that
students didn't anticipate?
