Ice Mummies—Siberian Ice Maiden

Viewing Ideas

|
Before Watching
-
To set the stage, ask students to locate the Altay Mountains on
a map and to calculate the approximate year the Ice Maiden died
(about 2,400 years ago, or around 400 B.C.).
-
Archeologists can infer much about a culture and its beliefs
from their findings. As students watch, have them make a chart
and record archeologists' findings, inferences, and any support
that exists for each, such as ancient writings or scientific
tests.
After Watching
-
Archeologists draw conclusions from as many pieces of evidence
as they can find. Discuss and compare student charts that list
what archeologists found and whether students think the
inferences archeologists made are valid and why.
-
Have students consider the benefits and costs of excavating a
burial site and state whether they believe archeologists should
unearth these sites and why.
