Perfect Pearl, The

Before Watching
-
Collect some bivalve shells, such as oysters, clams, or mussels,
and a fake pearl. Using hand lenses, have students investigate
the nacre, or mother-of-pearl lining, from which pearls are
made. Compare the colors of the nacre inside different shells.
Compare the nacre to fake pearls. How does it differ? Put a bit
of vinegar on both the nacre and the fake pearl. What happens?
(The nacre, which is calcium carbonate, will bubble. The fake
pearl will have no reaction to the vinegar.)
After Watching
