 Fall of Mazar-e-Sharif

In their first major victory, Northern Alliance forces led by General Rashid Dostum and General Mohammed Atta, with U.S. Special Forces A-teams 595 and 534, captured Taliban stronghold Mazar-e-Sharif on November 9, 2001. Thousands of Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters fled east to Kunduz. The defeat of Mazar triggered the collapse of Taliban positions throughout the north.
