Meet the organization using an age old approach to overcome poverty and help young people chase their dreams. We sit down with Susan L. Taylor, the former Editor–in-Chief of “Essence Magazine” and the Founder of the National CARES Mentoring Movement program.

He grew up in a life of poverty, drugs and jail, but chased his dreams to become a voice for his community.  MetroFocus sits down with award-winning actor, writer, community arts activist, and most recently the star, co-writer, and producer of the film, “Chapter and Verse,” Daniel Beaty.

The right to education, health, safety and equity. They’re all things that all children should be entitled to.  But for at risk youth getting them is not a guarantee. We caught up with the former Executive Director of Children’s Defense Fund-New York, Samantha Levine, and one of the scholars who has beaten the odds, Elphram Chowdhury.

SURVIVOR.

HOW SO?

CHAOS.

HE WAS PART OF THE GROUP WHERE

MENTORING THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN

IN THAT SCHOOL THROUGH GROUP

MENTORING.

A THOUSAND STUDENTS MR.ING

STUDENT BODY AS CHILDREN ARE

SHIFT FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL.

IT'S CHAOS.

SIX EMPLOYEES.

WE HAVE PSYCHOLOGISTS AND FORMER

TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS THAT RUN

THE PROGRAM.

HE WAS PART OF THE GROUP WE WERE

MENTORING.

YOU HEARD THE REST OF THAT, YOU

KNOW WHAT HE SAID?

HERE ARE MY GRADES TODAY.

HE HELD UP HIS REPORT CARD.

WE'RE SHIFTING CONSCIOUSNESS.

TRYING TO ASSAULT SOMEBODY IF

THEY HAVE A JOB AND SEE A WAY

FORWARD.

WHAT WE'RE DOING IS SEEKING LIFE

IN YOUNG PEOPLE.

HELPING THEM TO UNDERSTAND WHY

ACADEMICS ARE IMPORTANT.

AND THAT THEY ARE INTELLIGENT

ENOUGH TO LEARN.

WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT

SCHOOLS THAT ARE JUST -- THEY

ARE SUCH A GULF BETWEEN WHAT

SCHOOLS IN POOR NEIGHBORHOODS

HAVE AND THE RESOURCES THAT ARE

AVAILABLE TO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO

ARE IN WELL RESOURCED SCHOOLS

AND WELL RESOURCED FAMILIES.

SO IN SCHOOLS LIKE WE'RE WORKING

IN, IN HARLEM AND OTHER CITIES

IN THE COUNTRY WHERE WE'RE

PILOTING PROGRAMS WE HAVE YOUNG

PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE COMPUTERS

OR GREAT SCIENCE LABS OR HAVE

BAND EQUIPMENT OR

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES,

TEACHERS WHO ARE OVERWHELMED AND

NEED MORE SUPPORT AND A BUDGET

THAT IS CUT EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

SO WE'RE SAYING WE CAN DO BETTER

AROUND TO ASSIST MY GROWTH AND

THAT'S WHAT THIS ORGANIZATION

DOES.

IT SORT OF MAKES SURE CHILDREN

KNOW THEY ARE NOT ALONE AND THAT

THERE SHEEP FOR THEM.

HER I LOST MY SENSE OF

DIRECTION.

AND, YOU KNOW, AS TIME

PROGRESSED I REALIZED I'M HER

SON.

YOU KNOW.

THIS WAS A VERY SPECIAL WOMAN

WHO LEFT US.

AND IF I WASN'T GOING TO

CONTINUE HER LEGACY AND IF MY

SISTERS WEREN'T GOING TO

CONTINUE HER LE GA CIRCUMSTANCE

WHO WAS?

SO THAT'S WHAT KEPT ME GOING,

KNOWING THAT I AM MY MOM'S SON

AND THAT'S WHAT I ESSENTIALLY

GOT FROM HER, HER POSITIVITY,

HER DRIVE, HER ABILITY TO FLIP

OVER EVERYTHING AND JUST SAY,

YOU KNOW WHAT I CAN ACTUALLY

COME OUT AND EXCEL.

THEY'VE GONE ON TO EXCEL AND

PROVIDE INSPIRATION AND

OPPORTUNITY FOR OTHER YOUNG

PEOPLE WHICH IS SUCH AN FLY BALL

REWARD TO SEE FROM THESE YOUNG

PEOPLE.

FOR OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE GOING

THROUGH SIMILAR HARDSHIP.

IF YOU'RE PERCEIVING YOUR

LIFE BECAUSE, YES, I KNOW IT'S

PASSION LIKE READING A BOOK,
