Are You Your Parents’ Retirement Plan? Here’s How to Prepare

Children of immigrant parents often find themselves in a unique financial position. Apart from their own financial survival, they also bear the responsibility of securing their family’s retirement.

In fact, 72% of Hispanic millennials in the United States provide financial support to their families, according to a 2021 report from Bank of America — as compared to non-Hispanic millennials at 53%.

This episode of “Hay Dinero” explores ways to build generational wealth — a daunting task — while also ensuring our loved ones are part of the process.

Sharing the Responsibility

To shed light on this journey, we sat down with financial advocate Yanely Espinal, author of “Mind Your Money.” Espinal shares valuable insights into investing for retirement as a shared endeavor between the younger and older generations. This conversation emphasizes the fact that even small steps can lead to significant financial progress.

Dreams of Early Retirement

The prospect of early retirement remains, for many, a distant and unattainable dream. We had the privilege of talking with lawyer-turned-money coach Delyanne Barros, who has successfully embarked on the path to early retirement for the benefit of herself and her mother. Barros’s story attests to the power of strategic financial planning — and the possibility of early retirement as a goal.

Getting Familia Involved

Host Cindy Y. Rodriguez adds a personal touch to the episode by inviting her mother, Yolanda, into the discussion.

Their heartfelt conversation – in which Yolanda shares her own retirement dreams and the role of family in making it all happen – highlights the importance of involving our loved ones in our money journey.

Whether we aim for a traditional retirement or the dream of retiring early, it’s the journey itself that defines our financial empowerment. Every step we take, no matter how small, brings us closer to our dreams.
