Skilled Workers Remain in Puerto Rico

In Santurce in Puerto Rico, Jose Manuel, also known as Manolo, has experienced losses from Hurricane Maria. A scenographer and sound technician, the hurricane destroyed his workshop and disbanded his toolkit. It also forced his work to close. As a last resort, Manuel has resolved to stay through the reconstruction and has begun working with FEMA. Manuel’s biggest concern, also echoed by economist Kevin Gonzalez, is that people have left the island for mainland U.S., and with them have taken the labor force.
