Cellist Tommy Mesa's love of music began with his interest in playing drums. Selecting orchestra class in middle school, he learned violin before picking up the cello. Performing works by Ernesto Lecuona and Debussy on his 1767 cello made by Nicolò Gagliano, Mesa celebrates both his Cuban and French heritage.

Following in his brother’s footsteps, Joshua Brown picked up the violin at age two. He now plays a Nicolò Amati violin from 1635-40 on loan from the Mary B. Galvin Foundation and the efforts of the Stradivari Society. A fan of Schumann, he performs his Fantasie for violin and orchestra with violin and piano.

Taking Note — Viano Quartet
Composed of violinists Lucy Wang and Hao Zhou, violist Aiden Kane, and cellist Tate Zawadiuk, the group was formed in 2015 in Los Angeles at the Colburn Conservatory of Music. The string quartet performs movements from three works, one by contemporary composer Alistair Coleman, another by Haydn, in honor of his contribution to string quartet repertory and chamber music, and one by Mendelssohn.

The first new production of the opera at the Met in 20 years, director Claus Guth reimagines the biblical tale through Oscar Wilde’s haunting play, setting it in an intricate Victorian world filled with symbolism and contrasts of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine Salome, who demands the head of Jochanaan.
