Salvatore Licitra (1968-2011)

Salvatore LicitraGREAT PERFORMANCES mourns the passing of Italian tenor Salvatore Licitra who has died at the age of 43 as a result of injuries sustained in a motor-scooter accident in Sicily. Licitra’s unexpected Met debut in 2002, when he subbed for the ailing Luciano Pavarotti, made headlines. On PBS, he appeared in “A Requiem for September 11,” a concert event staged at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, N.J. in 2002, to commemorate the first anniversary of the 2001 tragedy. In 2003 he appeared with tenor Marcelo Alvarez in “Duetto: The Concert at the Roman Colosseum” on Great Performances.He was also seen as Luigi in “Il Tabarro,” the first opera of Puccini’s “Il Trittico” on Great Performances at the Met in 2007.
