Excerpt: “The Stupid Men’s Dance”

Men slap one another in slapstick fashion in a section nicknamed “The Stupid Men’s Dance” in choreographer Mark Morris’s signature work L’Allegro, Il Penseroso ed il Moderato. The accompanying air for tenor includes lyrics representing a joyful character, “L’Allegro,” who says he’ll go to see theater by Jonson or Shakespeare.

Air for Tenor

I’ll to the well-trod stage anon,
If Jonson’s learned sock be on;
Or sweetest Shakespeare, Fancy’s child,
Warble his native wood-notes wild.
