of activities in grades 5-8, all students should develop<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry<\/li>\n<li>Understandings about scientific inquiry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Content Standard B<\/strong><br \/>\nAs a result of their activities in grades 5\u20138, all students should develop an understanding of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Properties and changes of properties in matter<\/li>\n<li>Motions and forces<\/li>\n<li>Transfer of energy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>National Standards for Arts Education: Music:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/artsedge.kennedycenter.org\/teach\/standards.cfm?subjectId=MUS&amp;gradeBandId=&amp;sortColumn=&amp;x=8&amp;y=3\">http:\/\/artsedge.kennedycenter.org\/teach\/standards.cfm?subjectId=MUS&amp;gradeBandId=&amp;sortColumn=&amp;x=8&amp;y=3 <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Content Standard 6: Listening to, analyzing, and describing music<\/strong><br \/>\nGrades 5-8 Achievement Standard<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of meter, rhythm, tonality, intervals, chords, and harmonic progressions in their analyses of music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Materials <\/strong><br \/>\nFor the class:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Computer with internet access and audiovisual projection system<\/li>\n<li>Slinky\u2122<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For each group of several students:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wire hanger<\/li>\n<li>String (precut to one 4 foot length for each group)<\/li>\n<li>Yarn (precut to one 4 foot length for each group)<\/li>\n<li>Metal wire (precut to one 4 foot length and one six foot length for each group)<\/li>\n<li>Ruler<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSound Mediums\u201d Student Organizer (<a href=\"\/wnet\/musicinstinct\/files\/2009\/06\/gv-soundmedium-handout.pdf\">PDF<\/a>) (<a href=\"\/wnet\/musicinstinct\/files\/2009\/06\/gv-soundmedium-handout.rtf\">RTF<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Objectives <\/strong><br \/>\nStudents will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Define key terminology about sound<\/li>\n<li>Describe the movement of sound waves through various mediums and how different sounds produce different types of waves<\/li>\n<li>Understand that the human body is itself a medium through which sound and music may be appreciated by a deaf person<\/li>\n<li>Explain how sound is generally perceived by the ear and transmitted to the brain<\/li>\n<li>Understand that the audible spectrum of sounds which humans can hear is a small part of an overall frequency spectrum of ultrasonic and infrasonic
