demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of meter, rhythm, tonality, intervals, chords, and harmonic progressions in their analyses of music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Content Standard 9: Understanding music in relation to history and culture<\/strong><br \/>\nGrades 5-8 Achievement Standard<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students describe distinguishing characteristics of representative music genres and styles from a variety of cultures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nNational Science Standards<\/strong>:<br \/>\nWeb Site:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nap.edu\/html\/nses\/\" target=\"_blank\"> www.nap.edu\/html\/nses\/ <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Content Standard A: Science as Inquiry<\/strong><br \/>\nAs a result of activities in grades 5-8, all students should develop:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry<\/li>\n<li>Identify questions that can be answered through scientific investigations<\/li>\n<li>Design and conduct a scientific investigation<\/li>\n<li>Use appropriate tools and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret data<\/li>\n<li>Develop descriptions, explanations, predictions, and models using evidence<\/li>\n<li>Think critically and logically to make the relationships between evidence and explanations<\/li>\n<li>Recognize and analyze alternative explanations and predictions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Materials <\/strong><br \/>\nFor each student:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 copies of the \u201cMusic Experiment Writeup\u201d organizer (<a href=\"\/wnet\/musicinstinct\/files\/2009\/06\/em-writeup-handout.rtf\">RTF<\/a>) (<a href=\"\/wnet\/musicinstinct\/files\/2009\/06\/em-writeup-handout.pdf\">PDF<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>2 copies of the \u201cMusic Response Survey\u201d organizer (<a href=\"\/wnet\/musicinstinct\/files\/2009\/06\/em-response-survey.rtf\">RTF<\/a>) (<a href=\"\/wnet\/musicinstinct\/files\/2009\/06\/em-response-survey.pdf\">PDF<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For the class<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Computer with internet access and audiovisual projection system, for playing video segments and chord structure interactive<\/li>\n<li>Simple drawings (smileys) of a happy face, sad face, and scared face, to be posted in the classroom (can be printed from images on the web or drawn yourself \u2013 see Prep for Teachers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Objectives <\/strong><br \/>\nStudents will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Name and give examples demonstrating comprehension of the basic elements of music: pitch, rhythm, tempo, timbre, melody, and harmony.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that intervals and chords refer to combinations of notes, and that different combinations can be associated with different feelings or responses.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that some of our responses to music are learned through experience and may not be shared in all populations or cultures.<\/li>\n<li>Determine a research question that can form the basis of an experiment on the topic of people\u2019s responses to music.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct an experiment according
