Today, there are less than 500,000. This decline is blamed primarily on habitat loss and the killing of elephants for their valuable tusks, also known as \"ivory\". A 2014 study found that Central Africa had lost 64 percent of its population over the previous decade, with roughly 100,000 elephants slaughtered by poachers in the preceding three years. Despite these grim figures, there are still a few places where elephants are thriving. Countries such as Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Botswana still host robust populations. Botswana was the filming location of (https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/nature\/soul-elephant\/12654\/), which traces the life history of two bull elephants who lived into old age.
