{"id":105,"date":"2013-03-26T19:22:28","date_gmt":"2013-03-26T19:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/orchestra-of-exiles\/?p=105"},"modified":"2018-11-12T10:52:43","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T15:52:43","slug":"the-power-of-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/orchestra-of-exiles\/the-power-of-music\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<style>.video-wrap {position: relative;  padding-bottom: 56.25%; margin-bottom: 1em;} .video-wrap\tiframe {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; overflow: hidden;} .video-wrap.no-topbar {padding-bottom: 56.25%;}<\/style><div class=\"video-wrap no-topbar nocontent no-content cf\"><iframe id=\"partnerPlayer\" name=\"partnerPlayer\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"  src=\"\/\/player.pbs.org\/widget\/partnerplayer\/2364989813\/?chapterbar=false&topbar=false&autoplay=false&endscreen=false\" title=\"Embedded Video Player\" loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen width=\"512\" height=\"288\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Zubin Mehta, Israel Philharmonic music director since 1969, Pinchas Zukerman, a preeminent violinist, and others speak about the power of music to both individuals and to building community.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding musicians and the general public in the 1930s, Thalia Fenyes-Reichard, a descendent of an original member of the Palestine Symphony Orchestra, says, \u201cIn that generation and time, music wasn\u2019t a form of entertainment, it was a way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huberman\u2019s \u201cband\u201d of Jewish European musicians formed a new orchestra in Palestine that would tour in Israel and Egypt and perform before Allied troops during World War II. \u201cI think it was their way of fighting what was happening in Europe and fighting Nazism,\u201d says Fenyes-Reichard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so indebted to our ancestors, musically speaking, that they have left us 400 years of music,\u201d says Israel Philharmonic music director Zubin Mehta.  \u201cThese symphonies become stronger and stronger within the people\u2014who maybe not necessarily understand the structure, but the music speaks to them, especially in times of crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe that you can just play music just as an intellect,\u201d says renowned violinist Pinchas Zukerman. \u201cSomewhere, the emotion takes over. It has to. There is an emotional attachment through harmony that makes you sad or happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a particularly animated and also serious passage of interview, violinist Pinchas Zukerman sings a few famous bars of melody from Wagner and then says with an intake of his breath, \u201cthat\u2019s really powerful. This music connotes tragedy, disaster to society, a killing of a whole culture, not just Jewish culture but every culture, we know. Because the Germans know how powerful this music is. It is very powerful. Imagine, here I am an Israeli, my parents were in Auschwitz and I\u2019m calling German music <em>my music<\/em>? I\u2019m crazy too. Why is it my music? Because that\u2019s what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Orchestra of Exiles<\/em> premieres Sunday, April 14 at 10 p.m. ET on
