How one NJ business rebuilt after disaster

Sea Bright, New Jersey business owner Frank Bain lost everything in his hardware store in 2012 during Superstorm Sandy. The local community came together to help. See how Bain’s Hardware is doing 5 years later.

TRANSCRIPT

My name is Frank Bain.

The store is Bain's Hardware.

My wife Pat and I opened it

Sandy itself was an awful storm.

It was terrible.

It was like a rogue wave came

through and just washed out

the town. In one swoop.

There wasn't a house in Sea

Bright that wasn't damaged.

This store had four and a

half, five feet of water

throughout the whole place.

Everything in this store

had to go.

It was just muck and just junk

floating around.

The inside of a washing machine.

We also had a whole lot of paint

floating around.

Most people have a hard time

getting rid of two gallons of

paint.

Just imagine thousands.

Benjamin Moore was a

tremendous help to us.

I had two tractor trailers in

front of the store and

like 10 people to take all the

paint out of here.

We opened in seven weeks.

It's going to help us a lot.

Most of the damage to the

place was because of that,

I'll call it a rogue wave that

came through.

There was no sea wall across

to stop it.

Is it perfect?

No.

God doesn't like when you

build right on the ocean.

Every time you do, he knocks

it down.

Just think about it, in the

last five years, how many

hundred year storms have we had?

We have to do our best to

protect our world.

I have kids, I have grandkids,

you know, and I want to be

around for a while.

We have to be smart.
