What Is the Future of Skiing in a Warmer Climate?
Skiing is a popular sport the world over. In the United States, ski and snowboarding resorts are a $3 billion industry. But climate change is bringing shorter winters and reduced snowfall, which places ski resorts in a risky situation. Artificial snowmaking has been the primary adaptation, but the process is expensive, requiring massive amounts of energy and water. This casts doubt on its viability as a long-term solution.
Today we explore the effect of climate change on the ski industry, the problems presented by reliance on artificial snow, and what the future of the ski industry might look like. With special guest Dr. Daniel Scott, professor of geography and environmental management at the University of Waterloo.
