NJ Environmentalists Allege Climate Change Regulations Ignored By Governor
A group of environmental activists challenged the Phil Murphy administration over its alleged failure to implement necessary regulations to meet the state’s goals of cutting greenhouse gas emissions. At an appellate court hearing in New Brunswick on March 1, John Reichman – the environmentalists’ attorney – argued that the administration ignored critical amendments to the state’s Global Warming Response Act.
“Just two weeks ago we were in New Brunswick for Governor Murphy’s big, clean-energy announcement … [on] new targets for the state, that will be achieved more than a decade in the future. But today the governor is failing to use his authority to stop the seventh new fossil fuel project. He’s already approved six in his first five years in office,” said Matt Smith, New Jersey Director of Food and Water Watch, a nonprofit that focuses on corporate and government accountability relating to food and water, according to their website.
In legal filings, the Murphy administration argued that its policies have the state on track to meet the law’s targets, therefore writing new benchmark regulations would be unnecessary.
