World Predicted to Surpass Global Warming Threshold

The world is expected to surpass its goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial temperatures by the early 2030s, warns a study issued Monday, March 20, 2023, by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Once the world passes that threshold, climate disasters will become so severe that people won’t be able to adapt, scientists warn. By the end of the century, heat waves, severe weather events, famines, and infectious illnesses might cost millions of lives.

But the report isn’t entirely disheartening: The research shows electricity produced by renewable resources, like solar and wind, is becoming more affordable than electricity produced by fossil fuels.

During the last ten years, several nations have drastically cut their emissions. The report stresses that further change must be implemented quickly. Read the report here.
