Why are Women Bearing the Burden of Climate Change?
Women in Malawian communities are burdened with the vast majority of the work, and climate change is making their situation worse. The stress caused by changing weather patterns, crop failure and food insecurity are also increasing women’s vulnerability to sexual assault and domestic violence.
In this episode we meet Winston and Jenifa Zgambo. Jenifa works the couple’s farm by herself. Winston refuses to help. While over in the U.S.A. we are introduced to Denise O’Brien, an organic farmer and activist in Iowa. She speaks about the interest of women farmers in creating small, organic farms that combat climate change. But is it possible to fight climate change without confronting gender roles?
This is the second episode of the five-part “The Ants & the Grasshopper: The Series,” a co-production of Kartemquin Educational Films and Peril and Promise, a public media initiative from The WNET Group.
