Religious Leaders Fast to Close Guantanamo

In Washington, faith groups renewed calls to close the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba. Religious leaders fasted for 24 hours in advance of a Senate hearing on the possibility of closing the base. As they broke the fast, they described Guantanamo as “an open moral wound.”

Rev. Sandra Sorensen (United Church of Christ): “The practice of torture, the degradation of human beings in body, mind, and spirit runs counter to our calling for a more just, compassionate, and peaceful world that honors all of God’s creation.”
