\u201cPicturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea\u201d explores the social and sacred functions of the image of the Virgin Mary throughout history. The exhibition is currently at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. “The ways of presenting Mary in art change as society evolves. The early Church showed Mary as a kind of goddess,” explains curator Timothy Verdon, director of the Museo dell\u2019Opera del Duomo and canon of the Florence Cathedral.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
