Perhaps the greatest sign of this is that to young people, like undergraduates at my university, <em>Nostra Aetate<\/em>\u00a0doesn\u2019t seem extraordinary at all.<\/p>\n<p>These young men and women find nothing strange in the idea that \u201cGod holds the Jews most dear for the sake of their fathers,\u201d as\u00a0<em>Nostra Aetate<\/em>\u00a0teaches. Before they were born, St. John Paul II had already visited the Roman synagogue to pray with the Jewish community. In their lifetime Pope Benedict XVI developed the scriptural interpretation that underlies\u00a0<em>Nostra<\/em>\u00a0<em>Aetate<\/em>\u2019s teaching on Jewish\u2013Christian relations. Pope Francis co-authored an interfaith reflection on faith and family with a Jewish rabbi and close friend before his election to the papacy. Young people today have never known a church that does not recognize the Jews as the \u201croot of that well-cultivated olive tree onto which have been grafted the wild shoots, the Gentiles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27630 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2015\/10\/post-nostra-aetate-john-garvey.jpg\" alt=\"post-nostra-aetate-john-garvey\" width=\"934\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2015\/10\/post-nostra-aetate-john-garvey.jpg 934w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2015\/10\/post-nostra-aetate-john-garvey-800x416.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 934px) 100vw, 934px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nostra Aetate is not a\u00a0<em>fait accompli<\/em>. \u201cIn our time,\u201d the declaration begins, \u201cthe Church examines more closely her relationship to non-Christian religions.\u201d In our own time, we must continue the interfaith conversation that\u00a0<em>Nostra Aetate<\/em>\u00a0began. The particular challenge of our own time, I think, is to remember that the goal of this dialogue is not simply tolerance but truth. In the search for common ground that\u00a0<em>Nostra Aetate<\/em>\u00a0calls for, there can be a temptation to give ground, to allow that one vision of reality is as good as another.<em>Nostra Aetate<\/em>\u00a0exhorts us to recognize in other faiths what is true and holy. This is not tribalism. The purpose of interfaith dialogue is to strengthen unity and love among men. But it is the truth that allows us to live in unity and harmony.
