In June, California will become the fifth state to allow terminally ill patients to end their lives with the help of a doctor\u2019s prescription. We spoke recently with NPR host Diane Rehm, author of On My Own<\/em>, about her husband John\u2019s death in 2014 after a long battle with Parkinson\u2019s disease and 10 days after he began to refuse any food or drink. He had asked his doctor to help him die, but the doctor refused. Says Rehm, \u201cPeople need to talk about this issue. Doctors need to be taught about this issue. The whole idea of doctors being taught about helping to keep people alive but not being taught how to listen to those who are ready to die\u2014that seems to me sad and misguided.\u201d<\/p>\n
